Used Car Buyer's Checklist | Hendersonville NC | Near Asheville, Waynesville & Spartanburg

Buying a used vehicle is a great way to save money. But it also requires careful research, especially when it comes to a car's history and reliability. At Hunter Subaru, we want to help you make sure you're getting a quality used vehicle. That's why we've made a list of things to check during the shopping process.

Used Car Buyer's Checklist

✔ Do Your Research – Before you start browsing car lots, it's best to decide what type of vehicle you want. This will give you a more manageable list of things to inspect. As you research models, find out what common problems they may have.

✔ Exterior Checks – Make sure to inspect the body condition. As you walk around the vehicle, check for any scratches, dents or rust. You should also take a look at the body panels. Be sure everything lines up evenly and that the doors, hood and trunk can open and close. Always inspect the tires. All of the tires should be the same brand and should be in solid condition (no cracks, bulges, scuffing or bad tread). Lastly, check the lights to make sure they work properly, are free from cracks and damages, and don't show signs of moisture.

✔ Interior Checks – An odor is one of the biggest warning signs to check for in your interior inspection. If the car smells like mold, must or mildew, this could indicate a water leak or flood damage. Check to see if the seats are worn out or have any tears in the upholstery. Make sure the seats work correctly and that you can move the driver's seat into a comfortable position. Don't forget to test out the controls and instruments to ensure they're functioning properly. Finally, inspect the roof for signs of staining or water leaking through a sunroof or window.

✔ Under the Hood – Always take a look under the hood and inspect the belts, hoses, fluids, oil and transmission fluid. Everything needs to be at the right level, and you don't want to see any cracks, leaks or water. You should also check under the car to see if anything is leaking.

✔ The Test Drive – It's not enough to check that a vehicle is in good condition -- you also need to make sure it's right for you. That's why the test-drive is so important. See how long it takes for the car to start and if there are any odd noises. You also need to drive the vehicle on a variety of roads so you can test it at different speeds. Check that the transmission shifts smoothly and that the brakes offer good stopping power without pulling the car to either side.

✔ Paperwork and Mechanic's Inspection – Before purchasing a car, you need to get the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a Vehicle History Report. Most dealers will provide a report on all of their used vehicles. Also, have a trusted repair shop fully inspect the vehicle before you close the deal.
